Leonard E. Seidman
is the President of Seidman Avocats Inc., since
its inception in early 2016 after having been a
partner of Seal Seidman, G.P. which he joined in
1974. He received his Bachelor
of Arts degree in Economics and Political
Science in 1969 from the Arts and Science
Faculty of McGill University, and his Bachelor
of Civil Law degree from the Faculty of Law at
McGill University in 1972. He was admitted to
the Bar of the Province of Quebec in January
1974 and to the State Bar of California in June
1979. He was admitted to practice before the
United States District Court in April 1984. His
career in commercial litigation has permitted
him to plead before all the courts in Quebec,
the Federal Court of Canada, , and, on three
successful occasions before the Supreme Court of
Canada in the cases landmark cases of
Soucisse v. National Bank, [1981] 2 RCS 339
Farber v. Royal Trust, [1997] 1 RCS 846
Miller v. Canada (the Queen)/ Monit
international, [2001] 1 RCS 407
He has also pleaded before numerous
administrative tribunals in Québec, including
the Régie des alcohols, des courses et des
jeux , where Mr. Seidman often acts as
counsel for other law firms who are not
specialized in this area.
He was certified in
1996 by the Bar of Québec as a civil and
commercial mediator, for which he was
reconfirmed in 2001. His services as a mediator
are available in commercial landlord-tenant
disputes, insurance disputes over direct damage
claims and third party liability claims and
personal injury, in disputes between co-owners
of condominiums and with their syndicates and in
professional fee disputes. He is also available
in these matters as an arbitrator. He has also
served as an arbitrator for the Quebec Bar in
fee disputes since 2001.
In 2004, Me Seidman was
named a member of the Ad Hoc Committee on Costs
of the Bar of Montreal, and served as Chairman
of the sub-committee on financing litigation. In
recognition of his services to this committee
and his role in the report the Committee
published, Mr. Seidman received the prestigious
Order of Merit of the Bar of Montreal in 2005.
